Discuss the theme of greed in a piece of literature that you have read.
"Night" by Elie Wiesel is the true story of a Jewish boy during World War 2 who became part of the holocaust. The story reveals many horrifying truths that occurred during the holocaust which range from babies being thrown in fires to old men being shot before his eyes. As the story progresses, so does Elie. At the beginning of the story, you are introduced to a teenage Jewish boy, with a loving and respected family, who is also devoted to his studies. Some changes that he goes through involve questioning his religion and his humanity. A reoccurring trait that Elie has is greed. Although he tries to remain loyal to his religion and care for the other inmates, the pain eventually breaks him, causing him to put himself before others and even contemplating leaving his father behind for his own survival. The question that I kept thinking while reading this was wether he did the right thing or not. Most people would agree that he did the right thing, and I'll admit that if I were in his situation, I would probably eventually come to the same conclusions. Although this is true, was it worth it to him to live with his regrets? Was it worth it to know that such a darkness exists inside of him? I believe that this is a question that people have different answers to, including Elie, and I do not believe that there is enough evidence to support what he believes.
